1995 – JS was created by Brendan Eich, primarily to add functionality to the Netscape Navigator browser.

1997 – JS was handed to the ECMA (European Computer Manufacturers Association) to become a standard. The JavaScript trademark had some legal issues so they decided to call it ECMAScript. Today ECMAScript and JavaScript are basically synonymous.

1999 –¬†ECMAScript v3 was released. As the browser wars¬†reached their height, v4 was delayed and never released.

2009 – v5 released adding much needed functionality.

2015 – v6 or ES6 or ECMAScript2015 is released. The committee overseeing ECMAScript decided henceforth, each version name would include the year of the release.
