Zoom can be used to perform low cost web usability testing. Here’s what you need.

  1. Select a specific website operation that needs testing.
  2. Outline steps for a user to take that involve that operation.
  3. Create an observation form for the conductor (or observer) to record observations to be analyzed.
  4. Create a list of questions to ask before and after the test.
  5. Establish a process for recruiting test users.
  6. Make sure to get their info, name, email address, etc.
  7. Provide a general description of the test.
  8. Establish a convenient time for taking the test in a quiet setting.
  9. Let them know they will receive an email containing the steps needed with a link to a 30 min. Zoom meeting.
  10. It is very important that they understand the Zoom meeting will be recorded and that they need to vocalize or speak their thoughts out loud, as they go through the process. This is key to improving the website.
  11. Schedule the Zoom meeting and send the email invite
  12. Conduct the meeting and record the data (see tips on conduction a meeting)
  13. Repeat the same process with other users to see a pattern for areas that need attention. Patterns can be observed with as few as 6 users, but more will help confirm your conclusions.
  14. Analyze the data and make recommendations based on the patterns observed.
